Steps to Planning a Destination Wedding
As an international wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the most breathtaking destinations in the world, resulting in some of my most beautiful wedding galleries and stunning weddings. If you’re having a destination wedding, you won’t be disappointed in the decision. However, planning a destination wedding can come with challenges and considerations. That’s why I’ve put together this comprehensive, step-by-step guide to help you navigate the journey of planning your dream destination wedding.
Step 1: Choose the Perfect Location
A destination wedding is all about the location, so this makes for an obvious first step. But what types of considerations should go into making this decision? Consider factors like climate, accessibility, cuisine and the overall ambience you want to create for your wedding. Whether it’s the picturesque shores of a private island, the grandeur of a historic castle, or the serenity of a secluded villa, your destination sets the stage for your celebration.

This step takes a bit of research, planning and coordinating. If possible, try to seek out vendors who specialize in destination weddings, especially if they are not local to your destination. Some vendors such as photographers and planners can travel easily, but it could be a better option to go with a musician or caterer who is local to the destination for logistical reasons.
Regardless, it is entirely possible to assemble a team dedicated to bringing your wedding day vision to life with finesse. Be sure to talk with each vendor about permits, regulations, and other necessary logistics to ensure a seamless process.

Step 3: Plan the Itinerary
Creating a detailed itinerary is essential for ensuring that your wedding day runs smoothly. This is also something that your wedding planner will help execute on your wedding day. But consider that a destination wedding will likely have guests spending several days together. With that in mind, scheduling activities and events such as a welcome soiree, optional group excursions, and a farewell brunch will elevate your destination wedding above and beyond.
Step 4: Communicate with Guests
Communication is key when planning a destination wedding. Provide your guests with all of the necessary information and details well in advance. Include details such as travel information, accommodation options, itinerary, dress code, and any cultural customs or expectations.
